Ready to Travel? Tips for a Smooth Trip and Things You Might Not Think About

Claire Zlobin |

Travelling can be an exhilarating experience, but it often requires careful planning to ensure a smooth journey. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or venturing out for the first time, here are some essential tips to help you navigate your next adventure with ease.

Booking Based on Flight Deals

Why pay more for the flight costs when you can use those dollars towards things like more luxurious accommodations, a Michelin-star restaurant or excursions at your destination? One of the best ways to save money on airfare is to book based on flight deals rather than specific dates or destinations. Many airlines and travel websites offer significant discounts if you’re flexible with your travel plans. Websites like Skyscanner, Google Flights, and Scott's Cheap Flights can help you find the best deals. Setting up fare alerts can also notify you when prices drop for your preferred routes.

Booking Based on Location

Choosing your travel destination based on the best flight deals can lead to some exciting and unexpected adventures. For instance, if you find a great deal on flights to Europe, consider exploring less-travelled cities like Seville or Porto instead of the more expensive and crowded Paris or London. Researching what different destinations offer can open up new travel opportunities you might not have considered.

Tips for Getting Through Security Without Nexus or Global Entry

Security checkpoints can be a major bottleneck in your travel plans, but there are ways to speed up the process:

  1. Pack Smart: Keep your electronics and liquids accessible. Use a clear, quart-sized bag for liquids and make sure none exceed the 3.4-ounce limit.

  2. Dress Appropriately: Wear shoes that are easy to remove and avoid wearing excessive jewelry or belts that might trigger security alarms. Shoes that go past the ankle or ones will buckles will need to be removed even when travelling in Canada. When travelling internationally, I recommend wearing shoes that are easy to remove and put back on.

  3. Prepare Your Documents: Have your ID and boarding pass ready as you approach the security line.

  4. If travelling to the US, the MCP app can save you time on busy days. Those with the app and all information filled out with a receipt will go through a separate and faster line.

  5. ArriveCAN may reduce the amount of time you spend in Customs once you return to Canada. In our case, it would have saved us 3 hours of time when the system went down a few months ago, and they had to do everything manually. Unfortunately, we had deleted ArriveCAN from our phones; those who had it just breezed through.

Understanding Short Connection Times

When booking flights with layovers, be cautious of short connection times. Airports vary in size, and a reasonable layover might not be enough to comfortably make your connecting flight, especially if you need to pass through security or customs again. Aim for at least a 90-minute layover for domestic flights and two hours for international flights to ensure enough time. If you notice that you are short on time, speak to someone who may be able to get you to the front of the line. If travelling in a place where there might be a language barrier, familiarize yourself with how to use the translation options on your smart devices or learn some key phrases.

Exploring Stopover Locations

Using the layover option to explore a stopover location for a few days can turn a long journey into an exciting mini-vacation. Many airlines offer free or low-cost stopovers in their hub cities. This can be a great way to explore a new destination without paying for an additional flight. This option is only available by when booking your flight with a representative and not available when booking online.

Upgrading Flights Based on Bid Options

Many airlines now offer the option to bid for an upgrade to a higher class. This can be a cost-effective way to enjoy the perks of business or first class without paying the full price. When placing a bid, consider the length of the flight and the typical upgrade costs. Bidding slightly above the minimum required amount increases your chances of success.

What to Look Out for with Budget Airlines

Budget airlines can offer significant savings, but there are a few things to watch out for:

  1. Extra Fees: Budget airlines often charge for extras like checked baggage, seat selection, and in-flight meals. Make sure to factor these costs into your overall ticket price.

  2. Airport Locations: Some budget airlines fly into secondary airports that may be further from your destination. Check the airport location and plan your ground transportation accordingly.

  3. Strict Policies: Budget airlines tend to have stricter policies regarding baggage size and weight. Adhere to these guidelines to avoid additional fees at the airport.

Additional Tips for a Smooth Trip

  1. Check Visa Requirements: Ensure you have the necessary visas for your destination and any layover countries.

  2. Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance to cover unexpected events like flight cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage. I recommend travel insurance if you do not have this through your work or pension. This applies even when travelling within Canada outside your home province. Becarefull with terminology, medical assistance is very different from emergency medical and I know a few people who had to access care but wasn’t covered becuase they had medical assitance. When in doubt speak with your insurance provider to fully understand your policy.

  3. Local Currency: Have some local currency on hand for small purchases and tips. While many places accept credit cards, having cash can be useful.

  4. Backup Copies: Make copies of important documents like your passport, visa, and travel itinerary. Store them separately from the originals.

  5. Check for Travel Advisories: Check the Travel Advise and Advisory page for your destination so you are aware of what vaccinations might be recommended for your destination and what area of the country might be dangerous for tourists.

By considering these tips and being prepared, you can minimize stress and maximize enjoyment on your next trip. Happy travels!
